Terms and Conditions

Last updated: 19 July 2026

These Terms and Conditions ("Terms") govern your use of the Penslide website (penslide.com), the Penslide software applications, installers, portable executables, and any related services or downloads (together, the "Software"). By accessing the website or downloading, installing, opening, or using the Software, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use our website or Software.

Penslide is operated from the United Kingdom. These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales.

1. Definitions

2. Use of the Software

Penslide is provided as a screen annotation, PDF annotation, and universal annotation tool for personal and commercial use. Some versions are free, and some future or current versions may be paid, licensed, or limited by edition. You may download, install, and use the free Software on supported devices at no charge, subject to these Terms.

Before downloading the Software, you may be asked to confirm that you accept these Terms and our Privacy Policy. If you do not accept them, you should not download or use the Software.

The desktop Software may send an anonymous startup, dashboard, or human-use check-in so we can understand whether downloaded apps are actually opened and used and to help reduce misuse. No personal data is intentionally transmitted by the app in this check-in. We collect only technical fields such as event name, app name, edition, app version, operating system, a random installation identifier or hash, IP address or IP hash, standard user agent, language, and created date/time. We do not collect screenshots, drawing content, file contents, filenames, names, email addresses, clipboard content, exact drawing activity, what you annotate, which apps you use PenSlide over, or any content from your screen.

You may not:

3. Universal Annotator and File Handling

Some Penslide versions, including PenSlide Free Universal Annotator and PenSlide Pro Universal Annotator, can open or convert supported local files so that you can annotate them. Supported behavior may include opening PDFs, converting images or text-like files into PDF-style pages, using Microsoft Office or LibreOffice where available to convert Office files, opening unsupported files in their normal application, or starting a screen annotation overlay.

You are responsible for the files you open, convert, annotate, save, share, print, or export. You should keep backup copies of important documents before opening or saving them with the Software.

File conversion can change layout, fonts, spacing, pagination, colours, embedded objects, metadata, links, comments, form fields, signatures, security settings, or other document features. We do not guarantee that any converted file, exported PDF, annotated PDF, screenshot, image, or printed output will exactly match the original file.

The Software may rely on third party software installed on your computer, including Microsoft Office, LibreOffice, operating system components, printer drivers, graphics drivers, or PDF libraries. We do not control those third party applications, and we are not responsible for their behaviour, availability, security, licensing terms, output quality, crashes, or compatibility.

If the Software offers a link to download LibreOffice or any other third party application, that link is provided for convenience only. You must review and accept the third party provider's own terms, licence, privacy policy, and system requirements before installing or using it.

The Software is not a certified document management, legal signing, medical records, financial compliance, evidence preservation, accessibility, archiving, or regulated workflow system. Do not rely on it where a certified, auditable, legally compliant, or professionally approved process is required.

4. Annotations, Screen Sharing, and User Content

Annotations, highlights, stamps, drawings, text, images, signatures, screenshots, screen marks, and exported files are created and controlled by you. You are solely responsible for making sure your annotations are accurate, lawful, appropriate, and suitable for your intended purpose.

If you use Penslide during meetings, presentations, lessons, recordings, live streams, screen sharing sessions, training, support calls, or public demonstrations, you are responsible for what appears on your screen and what other people can see. You should not display confidential, private, copyrighted, unlawful, offensive, or sensitive material unless you have the right and authority to do so.

If you use image insertion, pasted images, signatures, stamps, or saved signature images, you confirm that you have permission to use those materials. Penslide does not verify identity, consent, authorship, authority, legal validity, or enforceability of any signature, stamp, mark, or annotation.

Screen annotation can visually cover, obscure, or alter how information appears to viewers. You should clear or review annotations before relying on a screen, screenshot, saved PDF, printed output, or shared file.

5. No Professional Advice

Penslide is a productivity and annotation tool. It does not provide legal, medical, financial, educational, engineering, compliance, or other professional advice. Any marks, stamps, signatures, text, or visual indicators created with the Software are not a substitute for review by a qualified professional where professional judgement is required.

6. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Software is provided "as is" and "as available". You use it entirely at your own risk.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not give any warranties, representations, guarantees, or conditions, whether express, implied, or statutory. This includes, without limitation:

We make no promise that Penslide will meet your needs, work with every system, remain available, remain free from defects, or be updated in the future. You are responsible for deciding whether the Software is suitable and safe for your device, system, data, and intended use.

7. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Penslide, its owner, contributors, and affiliates shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, the Software or this website.

This includes, without limitation, damages for:

This limitation applies regardless of the legal theory on which the claim is based, whether in contract, tort (including negligence), strict liability, or otherwise, even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

You acknowledge and agree that you shall not hold Penslide liable for any damage caused to your computer, data, or any other property resulting from the download, installation, or use of the Software.

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability where it would be unlawful to do so, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, fraudulent misrepresentation, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under the laws of England and Wales.

8. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Penslide, its owner, and contributors from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or in any way connected with your use of the Software, your files, your annotations, your screen sharing, your exported content, your use of third party software, or your violation of these Terms.

9. Use at Your Own Risk

You expressly understand and agree that:

Before using any downloaded software, you should take sensible precautions, including keeping backups of important files, using up-to-date security software, and making sure your system is suitable for the Software.

10. Downloads, Installers, and Security

Downloads may be offered as portable executables, installer packages, disk images, mobile packages, or other file types. Installer packages may create shortcuts, copy files, register uninstall entries, or make normal installation changes to your device. Portable executables may run without installation but still interact with your operating system while open.

You should only download Penslide from penslide.com or an official download link we provide. We are not responsible for modified, repackaged, infected, redistributed, or unofficial copies obtained from other websites, file sharing services, marketplaces, or third parties.

You are responsible for scanning downloads if required by your own security policy, employer, school, or organisation. We do not guarantee that security software, browser filters, company policies, or operating system protections will always accept or allow the Software.

We reserve the right to terminate or restrict your access to the website or Software at any time, without notice, for any reason, including breach of these Terms.

15. Governing Law and Jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from or relating to these Terms or your use of the Software shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

16. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
